Friends of the children of Chernobyl

Cloughjordan Branch

We, at the Cloughjordan Branch have been working with Chernobyl children since 1995, when we brought six children and one interpreter to Ireland for a health enhancing holiday. This year we hope to bring twenty five children, two interpreters and the mothers of two of the children who are disabled.

Over the years we have supported many humanitartan projects in Belerus, usually by providing financial assistance so people or communities could help themselves. We paid for the renovation of the sports complex in Lunin School which had been closed down for fear of collapse. Today it is used not only by pupils but by the various village organisations also.

In a situation where Perenova School had virtually no heating, we covered the cost of replacing the central heating boilers.

Following an appeal from Luninets Hospital, various pieces of essential medical equipment were purchased for the Maternity and Children's Departments.

For the last three years we have worked with the newly established Luninets Invalid Association. We have helped to purchase the necessary equipment to make their premises a place where young whom are physically challenged can find stimulation of body and mind, in an enviroment that creates for them an atmosphere of creativity and emotional fulfilment which the restrictions of their disability makes it so difficult for them to attain. We purchased washing machines and driers to enable them to set up a small laundry business to help them become at least partly financially self sufficient.

We support individual invalids by paying for their medical treatment when necessary and helping to make their homes and their general surroundings more invalid friendly.

Our work is financed by the people of Cloughjordan and the surrounding area. Their generosity of giving in so many ways has enabled us to go where we feel the need is greatest and to help to alleviate that need.

This may be a vast drop in the ocean, but we feel that it is all worthwhile if someone, somewhere, finds life worthwhile because our paths have crossed.
